A Robot is Judging You
By Elena Herweyer | Jul 15 2026
Okay, deep breath. Something wild is happening, and we need to talk about it. Your customers have a new best friend. It's not Google. It's ChatGPT. It's an AI assistant that answers questions in seconds flat, and lately, one of those questions is: "Who's the best (contractor, lawyer, dentist, accountant, etc.) near me?"
Here's the fun part: you get to decide whether AI's answer is YOU.
Stick with us. This is genuinely good news.
The internet just got a new front door, and it's AI!
Search traffic is quietly heading for a 25% drop by year's end, while traffic from AI platforms is up a wild 180%. People aren't searching less. They're just asking differently — straight to the source, no scrolling required. Which means somewhere out there, right now, someone is asking an AI who to hire. And if your business isn't part of that conversation... well, that's a client who picked your competitor without you even knowing you were in the running.
We're not happy with this. You probably aren't either.
Let's fix it.
4 wonderfully doable ways to get AI talking about you (in a good way!)
1. Let other people brag about you
AI doesn't care what you say about yourself nearly as much as what other people say about you. A mention in a local feature, a guest post, a shoutout in someone else's newsletter, a recommendation on the Facebook group — each is a little vote of confidence that AI takes seriously.
One mention: nice.
Three or four, all telling the same great story: chef's kiss.
The secret ingredient is consistency, not volume.
2. Write like a human who has something to say
AI has zero patience for fluff (and neither do your customers). Skip the "we're passionate about excellence" energy and go straight for the good stuff: clear headings, short sentences, real numbers. For example: "Trusted industry leader" → forgettable. "200+ projects delivered since 2015" → now we're talking.
Specific beats vague. Every. Single. Time.
3. Give your online listings some love
Your Google Business Profile and industry directories are working way harder than you think. Businesses with tidy, up-to-date, review-rich listings keep popping up in AI's answers long after the ad budget runs dry. Fill in every blank: hours, services, fresh photos. Ask your happiest clients for a review (they'll say yes — they like you!) Keep it current everywhere you show up online.
4. Let AI write the rough draft. Let a human make it GOOD.
AI is a great research assistant and a mediocre storyteller. Use it to get the first draft down fast, then hand it to an actual person to sprinkle in the personality, the specifics, and the little details that make people trust you. Think of AI as your enthusiastic intern. Lovely energy, but needs supervision.
Bonus tip: pick your battles
You do not need to conquer every keyword and platform on day one. Pick the handful that matter most to your business, show up consistently there, and let momentum do the rest. Small, steady, and smart win this one.
The takeaway (the fun kind, we promise)
This whole shift has a name: Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO for short. As you know, old-school SEO chased rankings. GEO chases something better — being THE name AI says out loud when your future client asks for a recommendation. Show up. Be credible. Be a little bit charming about it. AI will notice, and so will your next client.
Ready to make sure AI is your biggest hype machine, not your best-kept secret?
