Why customers leave your website (even when you're better than your competitors)

By Elena Herweyer | Jul 29 2026

Your competitors aren't stealing your customers.

Confusion is.

Most business owners think they lose customers because:

"Our competitors are cheaper." "Their marketing budget is bigger." "They advertise everywhere."

Sometimes that's true. Most of the time... It isn't.

Here's what actually happens.

A potential customer lands on your website. They spend 10 seconds there. Then they leave. Not because you're the wrong choice. Because they couldn't immediately answer one question.

"Why should I choose you?"

If your message isn't crystal clear, your customers make the safest decision. They choose someone else. Not because they're better. Because they're easier to understand.

The curse of knowing too much

Here's something fascinating. The better you know your business... the harder it becomes to explain it. You've lived it for years. You know every service, every feature, every technical detail, and every process.

Your customers don't. They're trying to solve one problem.

Fast.

They don't want to decode your website. They don't want to compare twenty bullet points. They want immediate confidence that you're the right choice. If that confidence doesn't appear within seconds... They're gone.

The $100,000 sentence

A mentor once said something that's stayed with us for years.

"If people are confused, they don't buy."

Simple. But incredibly expensive. Because every confused visitor is a customer who almost chose you. Think about that. You may not have a traffic problem. You may have a clarity problem.

Here's a quick exercise.

Imagine your website disappears tonight. Tomorrow morning someone asks one of your employees: "What makes your company different?" Would every employee answer the same way? Would your sales team? Your receptionist? Your website? Your social media? Your brochure?

If the answers are different... Your market is confused. And confused businesses rarely become market leaders.

The strongest brands do one thing exceptionally well.

They make decisions easy. Apple, FedEx, Volvo, Dollar Shave Club.

You instantly know what they stand for. That isn't luck. It's strategy. Because clarity builds confidence. And confidence drives decisions.

Here's your challenge this week.

Ask three people who don't work for your company: "What does our business actually do better than anyone else?"

Don't explain. Just listen.

If their answers surprise you... Your customers are probably confused too. That might be the biggest growth opportunity hiding inside your business.

Business builders don't compete on price.

They compete on clarity.

Because the company that's easiest to understand... Is often the one customers remember. Recommend. And choose.

Ready for an outside perspective?

One conversation can uncover opportunities you've stopped seeing because you're too close to your business. That's exactly what we help business builders discover every day.

3 things you can do this week:

1. Test your homepage
Show it to someone unfamiliar with your business for 10 seconds. Then ask: "What do we do?" "Who is it for?" "Why should someone choose us?" If they hesitate, simplify.

2. Finish this sentence
We are the best choice for __________ because __________.

If it's difficult to complete in one sentence... Your customers probably struggle too.

3. Delete one paragraph
Visit your website. Find the longest paragraph. Cut it in half. Most websites don't need more words. They need fewer, better ones.

Next week... We'll show you why the best marketing investment you can make isn't advertising, and it usually costs nothing.

That's all for now.

You won't want to miss next week's tip!
